Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Mentor public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Community Arts Commission appointment
One Mentor elector will be considered for a three-year unexpired seat on the Community Arts Commission ending December 31, 2026.
Civic Center pool and splash pad delays
A $280,000 change order pushed discussion of the roughly $10 million Civic Center splash pad complex total. Councilperson Blake suggested the city budget more conservatively and consider an income-tax cut instead.
Blackbrook Golf Course land purchase
The city is buying 12.54 acres next to Blackbrook Golf Course, partly to make room for a future pro shop replacement and rerouted holes, and partly to keep the land from becoming homes whose owners would complain about golf balls. Councilmember Blake initially questioned whether the land should instead serve housing needs.
Cooler Ban at Mentor Rocks Concerts
The Administration banned coolers at the Mentor Rocks concert series just a week before the season's tenth year began, frustrating regulars who bring snacks and drinks for their kids. Council members Krueger and Blake want clearer definitions, better public notice, and data on whether alcohol incidents are actually rising.
Garfield tennis courts resurfacing
A resident asked the city to keep the courts tennis-only, arguing pickleball lines would create safety issues and disqualify USTA and OHSAA play, including Mentor High School matches.
Pickleball court lighting, noise and security
A resident reported floodlights at the pickleball and basketball courts weren't on during the first busy weekend of the season, even though posted hours run to 10 p.m. He's asking the city to keep lights on until closing time, especially before Mentor Rocks Tuesdays starts.
2026 Hometown Heroes Banner Program
Applications open now; about 70 banners will hang on Center Street between I-90 and Mentor Avenue from Memorial Day to Veterans Day, then go to families as keepsakes.
James A. Garfield statue for America's 250th
A seven-foot bronze Garfield statue by famed sculptor Alan Cottrill will anchor the city's July 4th semiquincentennial celebration at Civic Center grounds.
Mentor Marsh Public Access Tower construction
After clearing agreements with ODNR, the city is finally building the 100-foot observation tower at Mentor Marsh, backed by a state grant and voter-approved funds. Construction should finish about nine months after the notice to proceed.
