Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Mentor public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Car wash moratorium
New car wash applications are frozen for six months while the city studies traffic, queuing and clustering issues near busy intersections. Existing and pending car washes, including one in litigation, are not affected.
Parking minimums and redevelopment barriers
The plan recommends cutting parking minimums so big, half-empty lots can be redeveloped. Council members Dowling and Donovan flagged it as a fix that should happen quickly.
Zoning referendum requirement
Council members and the city manager say the Charter's zoning referendum scares off developers and kills housing projects. Getting rid of it likely requires a Charter change — possibly a Charter Review Committee — and a public persuasion effort.
Industrial Land Preservation vs. Recreational Reuse
Council tabled a plan to put an indoor sports complex in a 2001-built industrial building on Clover Avenue, in the Tyler Boulevard industrial corridor. With industrial vacancy at just 4%, officials argue modern manufacturing space is too scarce to convert — though it means a youth recreation amenity isn't coming there.
